Unfinished NPP in Chernobyl

Chernobyl power plant used to be one of the most powerful stations in the Soviet Union. Before the accident of 1986, it had four operational reactors and two more were under construction. According to confirmed sources, power plant was supposed to have twelve reactors; unconfirmed sources say fourteen.

In 1986, unit number five was almost finished – opening ceremony was planned for November, 1986. There was just a pit and some pipe systems built for the unit 6. Unfortunately, the accident destroyed those promising plans. Construction of two units was stopped. Later, dilemma rose: either to decontaminate unit 3 (which was the closest to the exploded one and the most contaminated out of those which were not damaged) or to finish unit 5. Finally, the first option was chosen. In May, 1987, the decision was made: construction of third generation of Chernobyl power plant had to be totally stopped.

Since then, dismantling works have been in process. Inner part of the unit 5 is almost done and all the equipment was removed from there. Removal of the metal construction of the building is planned as well. However, nowadays it is still there, and it`s` worth seeing it and capturing this stunning construction.
